Awards, honors, and appointments recently received by University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine faculty.
Michael Abramoff, MD, PhD, professor of ophthalmology and visual sciences, received the Faculty/Staff Startup of the Year Award from the University of Iowa John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center. Abramoff founded Digital Diagnostics in 2010 to improve quality and lower the cost for health care through autonomous artificial intelligence (AI).
The American Academy of Nursing selected Cindy Dawson, MSN, RN, CORLN, as a 2020 fellow, considered the highest honor in the nursing profession. Dawson has served in many roles at UI Health Care during her 44-year career, including her current role as chief nurse executive and associate director of UI Hospitals & Clinics.
Janet Fairley, MD, FAAD, professor and chair of dermatology, has been named president of the Society for Investigative Dermatology for the 2020-2021 term.

Donna Hammond, PhD, professor and vice chair for research in the Department of Anesthesia, and neuroscience and pharmacology, and Antentor Hinton, PhD, a postdoctoral research fellow in the Department of Internal Medicine, earned 2020 UI Diversity Catalyst Awards for their efforts in promoting the development of an inclusive, diverse campus community.
Donald D. Heistad, MD, professor of internal medicine, neuroscience and pharmacology, will be presented with the 2020 Daryl and Nancy Granner Distinguished Mentor Award. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Heistad will receive the award during the Distinguished Mentor Lecture in fall 2021.
Nitin Karandikar, MD, PhD, professor and chair of the Department of Pathology, was elected to the Association of Pathology Chairs Council and will serve on the APC research committee.
Stanley Perlman, MD, PhD, professor of microbiology and immunology, has been appointed to the Mark Stinski Chair in Virology. Perlman has been studying coronaviruses for nearly 38 years, including those that caused the SARS and MERS outbreaks. Today, he is considered one of the world's leading coronavirus experts.
Steven Varga, PhD, professor of microbiology and immunology, has been selected to serve as chair of the Virology B Study Section of the Center for Scientific Review at the National Institutes of Health. His two-year term in the position ends June 30, 2022.
