Awards, honors, and appointments recently received by University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine faculty.
Ted Abel, PhD, director of the Iowa Neuroscience Institute, was elected to the National Academy of Medicine. Abel was also appointed as chair and departmental executive officer of the Department of Neuroscience and Pharmacology.
David Asprey, PhD, PA-C, was named associate dean for medical education and professional programs. Asprey is chair and departmental executive officer of Physician Assistant Studies and Services, the top physician assistant training program in the country, according to the U.S. News & World Report.
Gail Bishop, PhD, UI professor of microbiology and immunology, has been named a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the world’s largest multidisciplinary scientific society and publisher of the journal Science. Bishop was selected for her distinguished contributions to the field of immunology, particularly for insights into regulation of T and B lymphocyte activation.

Kevin Campbell, PhD, and Michael Welsh, MD, will continue to serve as Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) investigators for another five years, following renewal of their appointments. Both Campbell and Welsh have been faculty members at the UI Carver College of Medicine since 1981, and HHMI investigators since 1989. Campbell is professor and chair of molecular physiology and biophysics, and director of the Senator Paul D. Wellstone Muscular Dystrophy Cooperative Research Center. Welsh is professor of internal medicine, director of the UI Cystic Fibrosis Research Center, and director of the Pappajohn Biomedical Institute.
John Engelhardt, PhD, was named a 2019 Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors. Engelhardt, who is a UI professor and head of anatomy and cell biology, is recognized for his work in developing gene therapies to treat cystic fibrosis. He is also the director of the UI Center for Gene Therapy.

Kamal Rahmouni, PhD, and Dale Abel, MD, PhD, have been appointed as co-directors of the UI Obesity Research and Education Initiative. Rahmouni, who is a professor of neuroscience and pharmacology and who serves as the Fraternal Order of Eagles Diabetes Center Research Endowed Chair, is internationally recognized for his fundamental research on central neural mechanisms of obesity and its complications. Abel is the chair of the Department of Internal Medicine and director of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Diabetes Research Center.
Val Sheffield, MD, PhD, professor of pediatrics and the Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver Chair in Molecular Genetics, was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences for his work in constructing human genetic maps and developing efficient disease-gene discovery approaches.
Peter Snyder (89MD, 96F), UI professor of internal medicine and the department’s vice chair for faculty advancement, was named associate dean for faculty affairs and development in the UI Carver College of Medicine. Snyder served as a member of the UI Faculty Senate from 2009 to 2019, including one-year terms from 2016-19 as vice president, president, and past president.
Jospeh Szot, MD, UI clinical professor of internal medicine, was named associate dean for continuing and integrated medical education. Szot has served as the vice chair for education in the UI Department of Internal Medicine and associate director for the department’s residency program. In 2016, he became the medical director for the continuing medical education (CME) office in the Carver College of Medicine.
