1960s

Frank Abboud
Abboud is pictured in 1974.

Francois Abboud, MD (60R), is the longest-serving UI faculty member and he continues to work as a cardiologist, researcher, and educator. He served as chair of the Department of Internal Medicine from 1976 to 2002, and he founded the Cardiovascular Research Center in 1974, serving as its director until 2012. In 2013, it was renamed the Francois M. Abboud Cardiovascular Research Center. Listen to Abboud discuss 60 years at the University of Iowa.

1970s

Anthony Alfred Chiurco, MD (75R), won the traditional 12 Metre World Championship—an international yacht race—off of Newport, Rhode Island. Chiurco is a neurosurgeon in Lawrenceville, New Jersey. In 2017 he established the Anthony Alfred Chiurco MD Professorship in Neurological Surgery at Thomas Jefferson University.

Michael Welsh (74MD, 77R), UI professor of internal medicine and a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator, has been named a finalist for the $1 million Sanford Lorraine Cross Award, which honors lifesaving breakthroughs and innovations in medical science. Welsh was nominated for his pioneering work on mutations of the CFTR gene, which helped pave the way for highly effective treatments for cystic fibrosis.

1980s

Michael Thorpe (83MD) opened the first outpatient joint replacement program in Washington, reducing patient costs and limiting complications such as infections. He retired Dec. 31, 2020, after more than 32 years of orthopedic surgery practice.

Mark Denison, MD (83R, 86F), was nominated for the Sanford Lorraine Cross Award for being the first to discover coronavirus' ability to "proofread" itself for mutations, a revelation that has led to the only FDA-approved treatment for COVID-19.

1990s

Theresa Woods (91MD, 94R) received the Indiana University School of Medicine 2020 Graduate Medical Education Award for compassion and citizenship in teaching.

Jeff Moody (92MD) published The Doctor is Burned Out: A Physician’s Guide to Recovery. The book aims to helps physicians identify factors that lead to burnout and offers mental exercises, paradigm shifts, and habit changes.

Matt Maloney (98MD) has been named chief clinical officer of U.S. Anesthesia Partners in Dallas, Texas.

2000s

 

 

 

Matthew Herold (02MD) has been named vice president of medical affairs at Ridgeview Health Care System in Waconia, Minnesota.

2010s

Michihiko Goto, MD (13F, 14MS, 14F), received a five-year, $731,346 K08 grant from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality to examine the current and potential use of antibiograms as a tool for antimicrobial stewardship. The study will apply health informatics, data science, and prediction-modeling to create a personalized decision-support tool to improve the use of antibiotics for gram-negative rod infections.

Meghan Connett, MD (13R), UI clinical assistant professor of family medicine, received UI Health Care’s Culturally Responsive Health Care Award. Connett is credited for consistently advocating for more diversity and systemic changes in medicine.

QIang Zhang, MD (18R), and Nandakumar Narayanan, MD, PhD, led a study that found individuals with Parkinson's disease have a 30% higher risk of dying from COVID-19 than people without the neurodegenerative condition. The findings were published in the journal Movement Disorders.

In memoriam

Edward E. Mason (45MD), who was considered the "Father of Obesity Surgery," died on Dec. 29, 2020. Mason was a preeminent surgeon in the development and promotion of gastric restrictive surgery, introducing the first gastric bypass and inventing the first vertical banded gastroplasty.

Charles Hawtrey (61MD, 67R), former professor in the UI Department of Urology, died Dec. 29, 2020. Hawtrey is credited with being Iowa's first pediatric urologist.

Lawrence Dorr (65MS, 67MD) died Dec. 28, 2020. Dorr was a pioneering orthopedic surgeon specializing in hip and knee replacements. He also founded Operation Walk, an organization that brought groups of volunteer clinicians to countries around the world to provide free joint replacement surgery to indigent populations.
