Awards, honors, and appointments recently received by University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine faculty.
Gordon Buchanan, MD, PhD, associate professor in the Department of Neurology, received the 2022 CURE Epilepsy Award to support his research that investigates whether serotonin drives time-of-day vulnerability to sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP), since it commonly occurs at night.
Carlos HF Chan, MD, PhD, associate professor in the Department of Surgery–Surgical Oncology and Endocrine Surgery, received the 2022 Society of Surgical Oncology’s Clinical Investigator Award. The award recognizes early-to-mid-career investigators with a record of peer-reviewed funding and supports further clinical cancer research. Chan studies and treats peritoneal metastasis of gastrointestinal and pancreatic cancers.
Kalpaj Parekh, MBBS (06F), has been appointed chair and departmental executive officer of the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery. Parekh had served as the department’s interim chair since September 2021.
Andrew Pouw, MD, clinical assistant professor in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, received the 2022 Mentoring for Advancement of Physician-Scientists Award from the American Glaucoma Society. Pouw is developing and testing methods for patients to measure their visual fields at home using tablets and virtual reality headsets. The award is given to clinicians at the early stages of their academic careers to support their glaucoma research interests.
Elizabeth B. Takacs, (99MD) clinical professor in the Department of Urology, serves as the president-elect of the North Central Section of the American Urological Association for 2022-23. She is the first female urologist to serve as secretary and president of the section.
Carol Scott-Conner, MD, PhD, MBA, professor emeritus in the Department of Surgery, received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons. This award is given to a surgeon for their lifetime contribution as an innovator in the field of endoscopic surgery.
