What does a new hospital represent?

The term “hospital” itself comes from the Latin word hospes, which means guest. Hospes is also the root for “host” and “hospitality,” reflecting a provision of care and compassion.

But what does it mean to a community, state, and region? And when does it transcend its purpose as a place for treatment and healing, education and training, and research and discovery?

These questions had been on my mind as we neared completion of our new academic medical campus in North Liberty, Iowa. As this issue of Medicine Iowa goes to press, we’re still several weeks away from officially opening the campus as the new home for the Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation and a third UI Health Care emergency department.

I can sense the anticipation when I talk about the North Liberty campus with our employees, colleagues across the university, and everyday Iowans. And this excitement leads me back to the question: What makes a medical center more than just a building?

The answer is people.

It’s the care teams who bring their compassion and expertise. It’s the administrative and ancillary services staff who keep everything running smoothly. It’s the researchers and educators who shape the future of medicine. It’s the learners who bring curiosity and energy to our mission. And it’s the engineers, contractors, and construction professionals whose skill and professionalism can be seen in every detail of this remarkable facility.

It’s all of us working together to take care of the larger community that is the state of Iowa. It’s about a shared commitment to create greater access to specialized care and service.

In this issue, you will learn more about what’s coming to the North Liberty campus. You’ll also discover how faculty in the Department of Emergency Medicine are leading research that can reshape the delivery of care. You’ll read how our cancer researchers spurred a new era of clinical trials involving high-dose vitamin C. And you’ll see how the Abboud Cardiovascular Research Center has advanced our understanding of heart disease and stroke for over five decades.

With these stories, and all that we do, the common thread that binds our commitment is clear:

It’s our people.
