Over a career spanning four-plus decades at Iowa, Joseph “Jody” Buckwalter IV (74MD, 79R), has been a leader in orthopedics care, research, and education. He has served as chair of the Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation (1999-2014), secured tens of millions of dollars in research grants, published hundreds of scholarly works, and mentored countless students and trainees. In this photo, circa 2006, he reviews X-rays with Christina Ward, MD (07R, 08F), a former resident physician and fellow physician specializing in hand surgery.

He is a member of the National Academy of Medicine and National Academy of Science, and he has served in leadership roles for the Orthopedic Research Society, the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery, and the American Orthopedic Association.

For Buckwalter, medicine at Iowa has been a lifelong family affair. His parents, Joseph Buckwalter III (52R) and Carole Ann Kelly Buckwalter (43BA, 46MD) are medical alumni, along with two of his children: Andrea Buckwalter Potash (07MD, 07F, 12R), and Joseph “Jody” Buckwalter V (05PhD, 16R), who is an assistant professor in the orthopedics.
