Awards, honors, and appointments recently received by University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine faculty.
Donald D. Anderson, PhD, professor in the Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation, was named to the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering’s College of Fellows, a distinction given to the top medical and biological engineers in the country.
Noah Butler, PhD, associate professor in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, has been. His research focuses on understanding how the function of plasmodium parasite-specific B cells and T cells are regulated during malaria.
Bruce Gantz (74MD, 80R, 80MS) professor in the Department of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery, was among six UI faculty who received a Regents Award for Faculty Excellence from the Board of Regents, State of Iowa.
Denise Martinez, MD (11R), clinical associate professor in the Department of Family Medicine, has been named the Dr. Phil DeChavez Mentor of the Year by the Latino Medical Student Association. Martinez was also named interim associate vice president for health parity with UI Health Care in September 2021.
Ian Thornell, PhD, assistant professor in the Department of Internal Medicine–Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Occupational Medicine, received the Cellular & Molecular Physiology Section New Investigator Award from the American Physiological Society. Thornell’s research investigates the mechanisms behind ion transportation across epithelia and its influence on physiology and disease.
Andrea Weber (12MD, 15MME, 17R) clinical assistant professor in the Departments of Internal Medicine and Psychiatry, received the Laureate Award from the American College of Physicians Iowa Chapter. Weber specializes in treating substance use disorders and has played a significant role in improving drug use curriculum.
David Weiss, PhD, professor in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, has been appointed to the Microbiology Endowed Professorship. Weiss’ research centers on bacterial cell division, with a focus on the bacterial cell wall and cell envelope biogenesis. He also leads the college’s Summer Research Experience for Undergraduates in Microbiology.
