1960s
Allyn Mark (61MD, 67R, 69F), UI professor of internal medicine in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, received the American Heart Association’s Excellence Award for Hypertension Research. He studies the influence of the brain and sympathetic nervous system in controlling blood pressure.
1970s
Barbara McAneny (77MD, 80R), president and CEO of the New Mexico Cancer Center, is president-elect of the American Medical Association.
1980s
Thomas Johnson (80MD), professor of clinical ophthalmology at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine’s Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, traveled to Africa to perform surgeries aboard the Orbis “flying eye hospital.” As an ocular plastic surgeon, he has volunteered with Orbis on more than a dozen trips since the mid-1990s.
Daniel Wilson (83MD), PhD, is president of Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona, California. His previous positions include vice president for health affairs and dean of medicine at the University of Florida Health Science Center Jacksonville, and chair of psychiatry at Creighton University.
1990s
Dan Diekema (95MD, 95F, 00F), UI clinical professor of internal medicine and pathology, was elected to join the American Clinical and Climatological Association. His research focuses on the intersection of epidemiology and hospital-acquired infections, as well as antimicrobial stewardship.
John Wemmie (96MD, 96PhD, 00R), UI professor of psychiatry, neurosurgery, physiology, and biophysics, was named the Roy J. Carver Chair in Psychiatry and Neuroscience. He leads the molecular psychiatry division and is associate director of translational research in the Iowa Neuroscience Institute. His research focuses on the role of brain pH and acid-sensing ion channels on brain function and behavior.
2000s
Craig Vickstrom (00MD), a family medicine physician affiliated with Baraga County Memorial Hospital in Michigan, received Cornell College’s Alumni Leadership and Service Award for his commitment to the medically underserved in the United States and to patients during the Ebola outbreak in 2015.
2010s
Azeemuddin Ahmed (10MD, 10MBA), was voted Teacher of the Year by students in the UI Tippie Executive MBA program. A UI clinical professor of emergency medicine, he teaches a course on negotiating business agreements, competing for resources, and resolving disputes.
Kyle Glienke (13MD) has joined the staff at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center and UnityPoint Clinic Family Medicine Buena Vista in Storm Lake, Iowa.
Daniel Runde (09MD), UI clinical assistant professor of emergency medicine, received the 2017 University of Iowa Mobile Clinic Faculty of the Year Award for his efforts as a faculty adviser to medical and undergraduate students, as well as volunteering to treat underserved populations in and around Iowa City. The Mobile Clinic served 429 patients in 2017.
