With the recent addition of the downtown campus in Iowa City and ongoing construction of a new campus in North Liberty, it’s fitting to reflect on UI Health Care’s history of General Hospital, established nearly 100 years ago on the university campus.

This photo captures the surgical team that performed the first operation in General Hospital on Oct. 28, 1928. The procedure, a vaginal repair, took place in the gynecology operating room on the hospital’s fourth floor. Leading the surgery was N.F. Miller (seated, foreground), with E.D. Plass (second from left), chair of the obstetrics and gynecology department, also present.
